Removing Cat Urine

My cat had kittens about 8 weeks ago and apparently some of the kitties have been using under my daughter's bed to go to the bathroom.  Now it reeks in her room.  How can I get the smell out?

We are so glad you wrote to us.  We have experienced this problem ourselves. We even had a cat live under the bed for 90 days.  A year ago, we discovered that one of our kitties had been using a corner of the dining room to go potty.  The urine had soaked through the carpet and stained / damaged the pad.

We recommend steam cleaning to remove the urine.  If for some reason the odor is still there, that means that the urine has soaked through the carpet and has damaged the pad.  That part of the pad will need to be replaced.

When animals can still smell their urine, then they will continue to mark that area.  If you try to remove the stain yourself, make sure you do not use any ammonia-based products.  The ammonia smell encourages animals to mark. Try your local pet store for odor neutralizers and spot removers.  If it is a small spot, we recommend a spot remover called Folex, it is available at Target, OSH, and some grocery stores.
